Experience in Christian work: From high school onward preached in a variety of situations; in 1947, spent a week in Mexico with missionary Ron Harris and his family; in 1948, led a Wheaton College Gospel team during the summer; gathered experience preaching on street corners in Portland, Oregon after graduation from Wheaton; in 1950, spent six weeks at the Summer Institute of Linguistics at Norman, Oklahoma, learning about the use of linguistics in missionary work and Bible translation; in 1950-1951, held youth meetings in southern Indiana and Illinois and broadcast evangelistic radio messages on the program The March of Truth, together with Ed McCully and Bill Cathers; in 1952, went to Ecuador to assist Wilfred Tidmarsh in his work among the Quichua Indians. Elliot and Peter Fleming, later joined by Ed McCully as well as Jim’s new bride Elisabeth Howard, began a Christian boarding school for Quichua boys at Shandia.
